Girls Trip + Salted Roots Cabins

From L to R: Me, Sidney @sidneyrroth, Danika @girl.in.alaska

Last year around this time, The Salted Roots cabins in Seward, Alaska came on my radar and I’ve done everything in my might to try to score a cabin for a night. In order to get one of their cute A-frames, you either have to book months in advance or be on Instagram at the right time when they announce their new availability (due to cancellations) and pray that their new open dates coincide with your calendar and pray harder that you are the first to inquire about the new open availability. And that’s just what happened to me this spring.

In April, I was on Instagram just seconds after they posted their new availability for the summer and I scored the blue door cabin (shown above) for July 1st. YES! Initially, Brant and I had planned on taking the kids and making the trip a quick family getaway, but the day before we were to leave to the cabin, Brant’s work schedule changed and he couldn’t go. Just 24 hours before check in, I reached out to a few of my girlfriends (who all are content creators and have a presence in our area on social media), and invited them to join me. And would you have it, two of them said yes! My family getaway turned into a girls trip/work trip (with my 8 year old as my sidekick) and our plan was to get content, talk shop, take lots of pictures, hang out and take even more pictures. And let’s just say that our getaway was very successful.

So before I give you the full run down of our time in Seward, let me show you the place! I give you The Salted Roots A-Frame Blue Door Cabin.

I’m kicking myself for not taking pics of the outside of the property but I did share on my Instagram stories what is just footsteps away from our front porch steps. Check this out.

Pretty sick, right? We thought so, too. We eventually made our way to the sauna that evening after dinner, but after checking out the place and taking lots of pictures/getting content and having a quick beverage, we went out on a hike. Since one of my evening’s roommies is an outdoor enthusiast, she did the homework for us and led us not too far from where we were staying in Lowell Point to the Tonsina Creek Trailhead.

This was a moderate hike and you can find all of the info on it, including directions, a map and reviews from other hikers who’ve done it here. But the low down is this: it’s an almost 3.5 mile roundtrip, out and back type hike that gains 734 feet in elevation and costs $5 to park your vehicle in the parking lot. This kid-friendly hike (my 8 year old tagged along with us in his Crocs) has beautiful forest and ocean views, and you guys, it’s great for getting those Instagrammable shots. Scroll through to see what I mean:

This hike winds between forest and beach and as you can see, has a well maintained trail.

One thing to know about Seward is that the town closes pretty early. We finished the hike just before 9 and rushed to town to try to get to a kid friendly place that was open and served food because we were hungry. We lucked out and got a table at Thorn’s and though this place doesn’t look like much from the outside (or the inside, for that matter), their seafood chowder was hands down the best I've had.

After dinner we went back to the cabin and spent a bit of time in the sauna. Normally you have to sign up in advance for a time to reserve/use the sauna but, again, we lucked out. :)

The next morning, before we got ready for the day, we went out to Miller’s Landing to get coffee but the coffee hut on the property was cash only, so we ventured back into town. And I’m so glad we did because we found the cutest coffee shop. I instantly regretted not getting ready because the content I could’ve gotten for the ‘Gram!

After the caffeinated pick-me-up, we washed up and packed up and spent the rest of our time taking so many pictures! We walked across the street from our cabin to here:

And my girlfriends captured these photos of me by the water. Don’t get me wrong, we were all taking pics of each other but these were mine. Sigh. I love Alaska.

Our stay in Seward was right before the 4th of July weekend and the town was getting ready to have their holiday celebrations, as well as prep for Mount Marathon, so we grabbed lunch at one of the food tents/vendors that was set up in town. And while we were at it, we took… you guessed it- more pictures!

These were taken outside of Zudy’s by the Sea Life Center. Which, by the way, I ordered a slice of the Beartooth, a chocolate cheesecake, and it was fucking amazing. Just saying.

One of my girlfriends told me to check out a new place in town, the Mermaid Grotto Cafe & Boutique that is located down by the train station. Here was another gem of a place for those IG worthy shots.

It was the consensus between my girlfriends and me that our time in Seward was too short, that we definitely need to do a girls trip again (maybe make it a yearly thing for us), that we want to stay at Salted Roots again, and that we are so lucky to have found each other through Instagram. I highly, highly, highly recommend a stay at one of the Salted Roots cabins. I heard it described as “approachable luxury” and I couldn’t agree more. Be sure to let me know if you stay here and if you do, I hope you love it as much as we did.

XO,

Lesli
