Hike -Gold Cord Lake Trail (Hatcher Pass)

Length: 1.5 mi

Elevation Gain: 482 ft.

Route Type: Out and Back

As of 2021, I’ve lived in Anchorage for 15 years and I’ve never done any exploring in Hatcher Pass. It was on my bucket list to hit it up with the fam this summer and I’m so glad we got to check it off the list. Even though All Trails labels it as “easy,” I was a bit scared one of us was going to slip on a rock because it had started to rain and a huge portion of the trail is made entirely of rocks. Thankfully, no one fell, no one got hurt and no one needed stitches! About a third of the way up, we came across an old abandoned cabin (see pics below) which was a great stop for pictures. My kids thought it was so cool! And the end of the trail greets you with a beautiful lake. On our way up, we were passing people making their way down carrying their kayaks and paddles. Not going to lie, that lake would be beautiful to explore. If you do end up exploring this trail, make sure your shoes have lots of traction.

Gold Cord Lake is a 1.5 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Palmer, Alaska that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and nature trips and is best used from June until September. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

This trail is located by the Independence Mine in Hatcher Pass. The trail is easy and fairly straight until you hit the boulder field where you will find some switchbacks as you gain elevation. It is easy to follow and in good condition. There is an old cabin along the trail and a boulder field towards the top that is very easy to manage. At the top, there is a crystal clear tarn and lots of places to relax by the water. Wildlife consists of birds and marmots.
