Kayaking at Eklutna

Located about a 45-minute drive north of Anchorage, Eklutna is a breathtaking place to hike, bike, kayak, play and explore. Brant and I took our kids kayaking a few weeks ago and I was terrified that I was going to fall in the glacier-fed lake, but at the end of the day, we were all so glad we spent a few hours out on the water. What an experience!

You can bring your own gear (bikes/kayaks) or you can rent them on site, which is what we did. FYI: There is a parking fee ($5 I think, don’t quote me) but I can’t remember how much because we bought an annual parking pass at the beginning of the season- Sorry! But once you’re there, it’s a quick walk to the gear rental facility.

Once they give you the safety rundown, the paddles and your life vest, it’s a quick 10 minute walk to the kayaks where someone will be there to get you set up on your kayak and help you get in the water.

And then when you’re out on the water, enjoy. There is space in the kayak for you to stow a backpack or bag, so while you’re out there, eat your lunch, read a book, take pics, or enjoy your favorite beverage. I mean, the options are endless.

Lifetime Adventures, the company that rents out the gear, does offer full-day guided kayaking trips, as well as guided bike trips and overnight bike/kayak trips. You can find all of the info on what they offer here on their website.

This year marks my 15th year as an Alaskan resident and I can’t believe it took me this long to do such a fun adventure. If you live in the area, please do me a favor and do not wait as long as I did to kayak Eklutna. And if you do get out, be sure to let me know all about your experience!

XO, Lesli
